This summer, we'll offer a series of workshops for FYE instructors on topics including: Dialogue in the Classroom, Trauma-Informed Pedagogy, Communicating with Students about AI, Supporting International Students and more! Stay tuned for specific dates and more information coming soon.
Wednesday, June 11th 1pm-2pm (Virtual): Understanding the FYE Curricular Framework
The FYE team has been working hard making updates to the FYE curricular framework and we're excited to talk with you about incorporating the new core competency areas into your classes! Whether you attended the Conference on First Year Innovation and have questions about the framework, you're just getting started on your syllabus and want to make sure you're fulfilling the requirements, or you just stumbled across our new webpage and want to better understand the curriculum, this workshop is for you!
Tuesday, June 17th 3pm-4pm (In-person, Rowe 131): Teaching Dialogue in FYE
Learning how to have tough conversations and talk to one another is a crucial skill for life in college and beyond! This in-person workshop will go over the principles of reflective structured dialogue, why you might use a dialogue in your FYE class, and how to facilitate a reflective structured dialogue so that students have a meaningful experience. Participants will also participate in an abbreviated dialogue themselves.
Tuesday, July 1st 11am-12pm (In-person, MCHU 308): Trauma-Informed Teaching
Students come to our FYE classrooms with a wide variety of experiences. As they transition in the first year of college, many find new perspective on their experiences prior to college. This workshop will introduce participants to new ways to support students from all backgrounds and teach in a way that is both responsive and inclusive.
Tuesday, July 8th 1:30pm-2:30pm (Virtual): Talking to Students About AI
Facilitated by Tina Huey, Associate Director of Faculty Development at the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning
How do we communicate about AI with students so that they understand the role AI plays in the classroom, why they should (or should not) use it, and why different classes might have different rules? How do you communicate your own policies about? This interactive workshop will help you gain clarity on your own policies and how you can communicate with students about AI.
Wednesday, July 30th 11:30am - 12:30pm (Virtual): HuskyCT Q&A
Facilitated by Dan Facchinetti, Director of Educational Technologies in CETL
Starting to work on your HuskyCT page for FYE this fall? Have questions about how to set up your gradebook, change grade values, add content (or change content)? Come ask questions and find new tips and tricks to make your life easier through HuskyCT.
