Incorporating
Writing & Revision into Your FYE Class
Presented by Mandy Suhr-Sytsma, University Writing Center
In this workshop, you'll learn about FYE’s exciting
collaboration with the Writing Center--if you don't
know about it already! You'll also practice adapting
an assignment module for your class, teaching for effective
writing and revision, and grading (it doesn't have to
be daunting!). In addition, we will give you a taste
of the experience your students will have when the visit
the Writing Center for your assignment.

Helping Students Think
Critically Around Bias
Presented by Dr. Catherine Ross and Marny Lawton
In this workshop students have a chance to
explore diversity from a very personal perspective,
thinking about both visible and invisible factors that
affect them as learners. We then consider bias as a
natural human reaction to difference, and as a challenge
to the cross-cultural communication and critical thinking
skills that help us move past the immediacy of our own
personal stereotypes.

No Hands or Most Hands?
Some Choices
Presented by Dr. Richard Rockwell with Kevin Sullivan
When Mike Wesch asked two of his classes, “How
many of you do not actually like school?”, over
half raised their hands. When he asked, “How many
of you do not like learning?”, no hands were raised.
As a result of this disconnect, he and his students
produced this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGCJ46vyR9o
This workshop will discuss the video and the implications
for higher education. If attending, please watch the
video.

The First Year Out Book
Discussion (FYP has 20 copies of this book. Please arrange
to pick up the book in our office.)
Wild parties, late nights, and lots
of sex, drugs, and alcohol. Many assume these are the
things that define an American teenager’s first
year after high school. But the reality is really quite
different. As Tim Clydesdale reports in The First Year
Out, teenagers generally manage the increased responsibilities
of everyday life immediately after graduation effectively.
But, like many good things, this comes at a cost. (U.
of Chicago Press)

Shackleton’s Way
Book Discussion (FYP will order 20 copies of this book.
We will notify participants when the book is available
for pick-up.)
This compelling volume accomplishes
the unlikely feat of being both a useful management
guide and a suspense-filled page-turner. That's because
the book enjoys an unusually rich source of material:
a near-deadly Antarctic voyage that everyone survived
by dint of the leader's formidable management skills.
Margot Morrell and Stephanie Capparrell present a strong
case that Sir Ernest Shackleton was indeed a great leader.
(from getAbstract) Author Margot Morrell will be at
UConn next semester to discuss her book.
Dates: May 14, 21, 28, and June 4, 2008
Time: 12:-1:30 (lunch will be provided)
Location: SU 303
